Meta confirms Facebook, Instagram outage as platforms begin restoring service
Facebook and Instagram users report widespread outage before Meta confirms recovery progress
Meta platforms Facebook and Instagram experienced widespread outages on Friday, disrupting access for users across multiple regions before services began gradually returning online later in the day.
Reports of disruption surged on DownDetector.com during the morning, with users flagging issues logging in, refreshing feeds and accessing messaging services. The spike indicated a broad, multi-service interruption affecting Meta’s core apps.
Meta’s communications director Andy Stone acknowledged the issue in a post on X at 10:11 a.m. ET, stating: “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.”
At the time, Meta’s internal systems dashboard reportedly showed “high disruptions” across several platforms, including Facebook Ads Manager, Messenger API, the Messenger platform and WhatsApp Business services.
The outage continued for several hours before signs of recovery emerged. Shortly before midday, Stone provided an update confirming progress, saying: “We’re coming back, though it may take a bit of time for everything to be fully back to normal.”
By later in the day, users began reporting partial restoration of services, although some continued to experience intermittent access issues.
The disruption prompted widespread reaction on social media platform X, where users shared complaints, confusion and memes about the downtime. Some users reported being logged out unexpectedly, while others highlighted recurring outages affecting multiple Meta services.
One user wrote that repeated disruptions had become frequent, while others joked about the sudden loss of access to Instagram and Facebook during the workday.
Meta has not yet provided a detailed technical explanation for the cause of the outage.
