Milly Alcock reveals secret behind her 'Supergirl' costume
The actress shares the emotional detail behind her superhero debut costume
Milly Alcock is bringing a piece of Superman history into her upcoming superhero debut.
The 26-year-old Australian actress, who stars as Kara Zor-El in Warner Bros.’ upcoming Supergirl movie, revealed that her character’s cape was created using material from Christopher Reeve’s legendary Superman costume from the 1978 film.
Speaking on the Raiders of the Lost podcast, Alcock explained that the costume designers found leftover material from Reeve’s original cape and incorporated it into her new superhero outfit.
“My cape in this film was remade using material from the original Superman cape,” Alcock said. “They found there was like 16 meters of that material, so yeah, that’s in the back of my cape now.”
Reeve famously portrayed the Man of Steel in the 1978 classic Superman, later reprising the role in three sequels: Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
The new Supergirl film is inspired by Tom King’s comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with the screenplay adapted by Ana Nogueira.
The story follows Kara Zor-El as she teams up with a young alien girl named Knolle on a mission to track down Krem of the Yellow Hill after he kills Knolle’s father.
Like Superman’s secret identity as Clark Kent, Supergirl lives on Earth as Kara Zor-El while hiding her superhero identity.
Before landing the role, Alcock admitted she felt nervous about auditioning for such an iconic character. In an earlier interview with Variety, she revealed that she pushed herself to embrace the opportunity despite her fears.
“I knew that it was what I needed to do, because it scared me,” she said. “Why not go for it?”
With a costume carrying a connection to Superman’s cinematic legacy, Alcock’s Supergirl is set to introduce a new chapter in the superhero’s story when the film arrives later this month.
