Amanda Seyfried says Charlie Kirk backlash led her to hire security

Amanda Seyfried has said she was forced to hire a bodyguard after facing intense backlash over comments she made following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, describing the experience as a stark reminder of the hostility that can accompany public debate.

In an interview with British GQ published on Monday, the Oscar-nominated actress reflected on the controversy that followed her social media reaction to Kirk’s fatal shooting in September 2025. Seyfried had described the political commentator as “hateful” after news of his death, a remark that sparked widespread criticism online.

Revisiting the fallout months later, the Housemaid star defended her right to express her views while acknowledging the scale of the response she received.

“A, I’m allowed to f–king voice my feelings, and B, do it in a way that’s not unkind necessarily,” Seyfried told the magazine.

The actress said the reaction exposed her to a level of animosity she had not previously experienced.

“But there’s just an outsized fear and hatred and impulse to bash and to tear down,” she added. “And I experienced a very small fraction of that.”

Seyfried Says Safety Concerns Prompted Security Measures

Seyfried, 40, said the backlash eventually reached a point where she felt the need to take additional precautions for her personal safety.

“I want my kids to be able to feel safe to voice their opinions as long as they’re not harmful,” she said.

The actress, who shares daughter Nina, 9, and son Thomas, 5, with husband Thomas Sadoski, explained that the controversy left her questioning how openly people can express their views without fear of repercussions.

“So I’m like, ‘What do I do? What do I say?’ And then all of a sudden I find myself with a f–king bodyguard at the airport and I’m like, ‘This is crazy,’” she said.

Controversy Stemmed From Response to Charlie Kirk’s Death

The backlash originated after Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University during a stop on his American Comeback Tour in September 2025. He was 31.

Following news of the shooting, Seyfried commented on social media that Kirk had been “hateful,” drawing criticism from those who argued the remark was inappropriate given the circumstances surrounding his death.

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was a prominent conservative activist and commentator. He is survived by his wife, Erika Kirk, and their two children.

As criticism mounted, Seyfried later sought to clarify her position, stressing that her criticism of Kirk’s views did not diminish her condemnation of the violence that ended his life.

“We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable. No one should have to experience this level of violence.”

She concluded the post by calling attention to the broader issue of gun violence in the United States.

“This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?” she wrote.

Actress Previously Refused to Retract Her Remarks

The British GQ interview is not the first time Seyfried has defended her comments.

Speaking to Who What Wear in December 2025, the actress rejected calls to apologise, arguing that her observations were based on Kirk’s publicly expressed views and record.

“I mean, for f–ks sake, I commented on one thing. I said something that was based on actual reality and actual footage and actual quotes,” she told the publication.

“What I said was pretty damn factual, and I’m free to have an opinion, of course.”

The controversy has continued to generate discussion about the limits of public criticism, particularly when directed at polarising political figures, as well as the personal security challenges faced by high-profile celebrities in an increasingly volatile online environment.
