Duffer Brothers’ new series ‘The Boroughs’ canceled after one season at Netflix
The 'Stranger Things' creators latest sci-fi series won’t return for a second season at Netflix
The Duffer Brothers’ latest television project has been cut short, with Netflix confirming that their sci-fi series The Boroughs will not return for a second season after its debut run.
According to industry reports, including Deadline, the streamer has decided against renewing the series despite earlier discussions that had pointed toward a potential continuation.
A writer’s room for a second season had reportedly already been opened, and there were even early conversations about filming Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs was executive produced by Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, the duo behind Netflix’s global hit Stranger Things.
The series followed residents of a seemingly peaceful retirement community who are drawn into a supernatural mystery after a grieving newcomer encounters something monstrous.
The official premise described a group of unlikely heroes uncovering a hidden danger beneath their community, where “golden years” prove anything but safe.
Despite receiving generally positive critical reactions, the show reportedly struggled to deliver strong enough viewership to justify its large production costs, which included extensive visual effects and a high-profile cast featuring Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, and Alfre Woodard.
The cancellation adds to a mixed year for the Duffers’ broader Netflix slate. Their other project, Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, is being treated as a limited series and is not expected to continue.
At present, their only confirmed ongoing Netflix title is the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales From '85.
Meanwhile, the creative duo is preparing for a new phase in their career. Earlier this week, Paramount confirmed that their upcoming mystery project is scheduled for release on November 3, 2028, marking their first major work since signing an exclusive four-year deal with the studio following their departure from Netflix.
The Duffers’ move to Paramount signals a broader shift after nearly a decade at Netflix, where they built their reputation with Stranger Things, one of the platform’s most successful original series.
