Former Brazilian Mayor fatally shoots estranged wife during divorce meeting
Estranged husband reportedly opposed divorce before shooting
A Brazilian businesswoman was killed after her estranged husband, a former mayor and serving councilman, allegedly shot her during a meeting to finalise their divorce before taking his own life.
Icicléia Alves Veloso, 41, died on June 4, one day after the shooting at a law office in the city of Ourilândia do Norte, located in Brazil’s northern state of Pará, as per People.
Authorities are investigating the case as a suspected femicide followed by suicide.
Meeting Was Intended to Finalise Divorce
According to local reports, Icicléia and her husband, Romilson Veloso e Silva, 69, had been separated for approximately three months before the fatal incident.
Family members and investigators reportedly said the former mayor struggled to accept the end of the marriage. After apparently agreeing to move forward with the divorce, the pair met at a lawyer’s office on June 3 to complete the necessary paperwork.
During the meeting, Romilson allegedly requested a brief private conversation with his wife and asked their lawyer to leave the room.
Moments later, gunshots were heard from inside the office.
Security Footage Captured the Attack
Investigators reviewing security camera footage reportedly found that the former politician approached Icicléia from behind while she was seated and shot her in the head.
Emergency responders found the businesswoman still alive at the scene and rushed her to a local hospital. She later died from her injuries.
Authorities said Romilson then went to a bathroom inside the office, where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Community Mourns Businesswoman
Icicléia was known as a successful entrepreneur in the region and leaves behind three children.
Romilson had previously served four terms as mayor of Ourilândia do Norte and was a member of the local council at the time of his death.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, though local reports indicate authorities are treating the case as a murder-suicide linked to the couple’s divorce proceedings.
