George Lucas set for rare voice acting comeback in new movie
George Lucas will voice a character in 'Minions & Monsters', out July 1
George Lucas returned to Hollywood for a rare on-screen project more than a decade after stepping away from big-budget filmmaking.
The Star Wars creator will voice a character in Illumination’s upcoming animated feature Minions & Monsters, marking his first major acting role in years. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 1.
The news was confirmed by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, who revealed that Lucas joined the cast after discussions about a character that seemed perfectly suited to the legendary filmmaker.
"I got such a fast yes," Meledandri told Collider, explaining that Lucas quickly agreed when approached about the role.
Illumination Founder Reveals How Lucas Joined the Film
Meledandri said he first met Lucas about two years ago and learned that the filmmaker was a fan of Illumination’s movies, particularly the Despicable Me franchise and its popular Minions characters.
According to the producer, an idea for a character emerged during development of Minions & Monsters, prompting him to suggest reaching out to Lucas.
"What if we could get George?" he recalled asking the creative team.
Lucas ultimately recorded his lines in Paris, where he met with filmmaker Pierre Coffin in a recording studio.
Meledandri also revealed that Lucas appears eager to continue his involvement with the franchise.
"I saw him recently, and he's already talking to me about the role he wants to do next in the next Minions movie," he said.
First Major Screen Role Since Retirement
Lucas announced in 2012 that he was retiring from large-scale Hollywood filmmaking following the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney.
At the time, he said he wanted to move away from the business and focus on other pursuits.
Although he has remained connected to the entertainment industry in limited capacities, including executive producer and consultant credits on later Star Wars and Indiana Jones projects, he has largely stayed out of the spotlight.
His last credited acting role came in a 2007 episode of Robot Chicken, in which he voiced himself.
In recent years, Lucas has focused much of his attention on the development of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, which is expected to open in September 2026.
Now, with Minions & Monsters, the filmmaker is making an unexpected return to the screen — and it appears he may not be done yet.
