Shania Twain reveals why she finally loves her body at 60 after years of struggle
The singer says she now feels confident enough to embrace her natural self
Shania Twain has revealed she finally feels confident and proud of her body at the age of 60 after years of struggling with body image issues.
The You’re Still The One singer previously admitted she went through a difficult period where she felt uncomfortable with her changing body, especially during menopause, and even avoided looking at herself in the mirror.
However, Shania says she has now reached a place of acceptance and is embracing herself without worrying about other people’s opinions.
“I have a 60-year-old body, but I will walk on the beach in my bikini,” Shania told The Independent. “I don’t really care if [people] are OK with it or not.”
The country superstar admitted she wishes she had become comfortable in her own skin earlier, explaining that confidence has been an important part of her personal growth.
“If you’re not comfortable in your own skin, you will never be yourself,” she said.
Shania also reflected on the inspiration behind her hit song Man! I Feel Like a Woman! revealing that the track represented a time when she was learning to embrace her identity.
“I was saying: ‘I’m over strapping my chest down’,” she explained, adding that she stopped doing so after her first music video.
The singer previously opened up about struggling with menopause symptoms during her 2019 Las Vegas residency, admitting the physical changes affected her confidence.
“In menopause you lose control of your body,” she said at the time. “I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I hated my body.”
Shania later realised that the approach she was taking was unhealthy. She revealed she had restricted certain foods and pushed her body through intense workouts in an effort to maintain a certain appearance.
“I was malnourished,” she admitted. “I was doing very unhealthy things. And I was working my body more than I was feeding it, to keep up with the strain.”
Now, the singer says menopause has helped her develop a healthier mindset and accept the changes that come with ageing.
“Now I’m, like, bring on the mirrors, I’m going to look at myself all day long,” Shania said.
“Menopause has been very good for me because I’ve learnt that some things you cannot control.”
