Jordana Brewster shares heartbreaking confession about welcoming sons through surrogate
The 'Fast & Furious' star explains how her surrogacy journey affected her emotionally
Jordana Brewster has opened up about the emotional challenges she faced during her journey to motherhood, revealing that becoming a parent through surrogacy left her struggling with feelings of guilt and feeling like an “imposter.”
The Fast & Furious star, 46, is the mother of two sons, Julian, 12, and Rowan, 10, whom she welcomed through surrogacy with her former husband, Andrew Form.
In a personal essay for The Cut, Brewster shared that the process brought unexpected emotions she had never anticipated.
The actress explained that after attending a pregnancy scan with her surrogate, she experienced an overwhelming emotional reaction and broke down afterward.
“I sobbed and sobbed in my hotel room until I almost vomited,” Brewster wrote, describing the difficult feelings she experienced as she processed the reality of her child growing inside someone else.
Brewster revealed that her decision to use a surrogate was influenced by a medical condition that causes seizures, with doctors warning that carrying a pregnancy herself could be dangerous.
Although she was excited to welcome her first son, Julian, the actress admitted she struggled with complicated feelings about whether she had “earned” motherhood.
“I felt like I had a dirty little secret: I hadn’t earned my child,” she wrote, explaining that those emotions created a sense of insecurity during her early years as a parent.
Brewster also recalled a moment when a school official suggested she take time away from work to strengthen her bond with her son, a comment that she said intensified her fears and made her question herself as a mother.
She explained that at the time, she was already balancing parenting responsibilities while her former husband was frequently away for work, leaving her to navigate motherhood largely on her own.
The actress shared that some of the shame she carried began to fade after welcoming her second son, but she later faced additional challenges, including surgery related to her seizures and the end of her marriage.
Reflecting on her journey years later, Brewster said she now views motherhood differently and has come to understand that the bond between parent and child is built through time, love, and care.
“Becoming a mother is earned; it’s not a given,” she wrote, sharing the lesson she learned through her experience.
