Ryan O’Connell confirmed that HBO Max’s planned adaptation of Anon Pls is no longer moving forward.

Speaking on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, O’Connell said the project based on DeuxMoi’s novel had stalled during development.

“Oh, yes, but that’s over. It didn’t move forward,” he said. “But definitely had a few sessions with Deuxmoi herself.”

The series was first given a script-to-series order in 2022, with O’Connell attached to write alongside Diablo Cody. Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television were set to produce the one-hour drama.

The adaptation was based on Anon Pls, a novel co-written by the anonymous creator behind celebrity gossip account DeuxMoi and author Jessica Goodman. The Instagram account has since grown into a major pop culture fixture with more than 2 million followers.

‘Anon Pls’ Was Based on Viral Gossip Culture

The series was intended to explore the world of online celebrity gossip, inspired by the fictionalised story of an assistant who transforms her Instagram account into a viral gossip blog on a drunken impulse.

As her account gains traction, she becomes an anonymous internet figure whose influence begins to blur the lines between her online persona and real life.

Development Included High-Profile Writers and Studios

At the time of its announcement, the project brought together several major names in television and film writing, including O’Connell and Diablo Cody.

HBO Max’s involvement, along with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, positioned the series as a notable adaptation of internet-driven celebrity culture.

Project Ultimately Did Not Move Forward

Despite early momentum and industry interest, O’Connell confirmed that the adaptation stalled and did not progress beyond development.

The comments effectively confirm that Anon Pls will not be moving forward at HBO Max.
