Top Boy actor Micheal Ward has been found not guilty of all rape and sexual assault charges following a two-week trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court in London.

The 28-year-old actor became visibly emotional as the verdicts were delivered on Friday, breaking down in tears after the jury acquitted him of every charge.

Ward, who won the EE Rising Star BAFTA Award in 2020, had denied two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault stemming from allegations made by a woman he met outside a New Year's party in London in January 2023.

Throughout the trial, Ward maintained that the sexual encounter had been consensual.

“We engaged in consensual sex, had a great time and she was actively participating in what we were doing all the time,” he told the court.

After deliberating for five hours and 25 minutes, the jury returned unanimous not guilty verdicts on all counts.

Speaking outside the courthouse, Ward's defense lawyer, Humzah Ilyas, welcomed the outcome and reiterated his client's position.

“As he maintained throughout this case, this was a consensual sexual encounter. The jury agreed and cleared him of all wrongdoing,” Ilyas said.

The lawyer noted that the investigation had lasted more than three years and had taken a significant toll on the actor and those around him.

“It has been three-and-a-half years since the police started investigating this matter, during which time Micheal's life, as well as his successful career, has been put on hold,” he said. “This has, inevitably, had a profound impact on him and those closest to him.”

Ilyas added that Ward is now looking forward to moving on with his life and career.

“Micheal is thankful this process has now reached a conclusion. He looks forward to getting back to doing the work he loves and focusing on the future.”

In the statement, Ward also acknowledged the experiences of survivors of sexual violence.

“As he starts to rebuild his life, Micheal would like to acknowledge those who have experienced sexual violence and abuse. They deserve to be heard, treated with compassion, and have their allegations taken seriously.”

Standing alongside his lawyer, the actor appeared emotional as the statement was read.

Ilyas concluded by thanking those who supported Ward throughout the legal proceedings.

“Micheal would like to thank God and his family. He is very appreciative of everyone who stood by him. Their support, prayers and love helped carry him.”

The verdict brings the high-profile case to a close, allowing Ward to resume his acting career after years of legal proceedings.
