Brian Austin Green has revealed that therapy transformed the way he approaches relationships following the end of his marriage to Megan Fox.

The 52-year-old actor said he realized he needed to change long-standing relationship patterns after his divorce and began focusing on building emotional connections before pursuing romance.

Speaking on the I Do, Part 2 podcast, Green reflected on his previous approach to dating.

“Until Sharna, my ex and I were together for almost 15 years. We were married for almost 10 years and I led with physical attraction,” he said.

“First, I’d be physically attracted to somebody and then sort of build a relationship around that.”

Green admitted he never expected his marriage to Fox to end and said the experience prompted him to seek therapy to better understand his role in past relationships.

“I was divorced, which I didn’t expect. I had three kids. I was a single parent,” he said.

“And I knew that I didn’t want to repeat things that I had done. So I went through all sorts of therapy... to really figure out what it was that I brought into a relationship that was just toxic and wasn’t good.”

After working on himself, Green said he realized friendship should come before romance, an approach he adopted with his current partner, Sharna Burgess.

“I think when you start from a place of a genuine connection with someone, then you’re not so concerned about whether they are truly into you or not,” he explained.

He added that he and Burgess were open about both their strengths and flaws from the beginning of their relationship.

“Sharna and I talked about our best qualities and our worst qualities together. We sort of put it all out on the table,” he said.

Green also reflected on co-parenting after the divorce, admitting it was initially difficult to accept spending less time with his children.

“I know I grieved the concept of missing half the life of my kids. That meant a lot to me,” he said.

However, he explained that he eventually came to see the time apart as an opportunity to recharge, allowing him to be more present when his children returned.

“Then when they come back over, I can give them all of my attention,” he said.

Green shares sons Noah, Bodhi and Journey with Fox, son Kassius with actress Vanessa Marcil, and son Zane with Burgess.
