Anthropic launches Claude pricing in India, biggest market after US
Claude subscriptions now available in rupees as Anthropic expands India push
Anthropic has started offering Claude subscriptions in Indian rupees, localising pricing for its largest market outside the United States as the AI company expands its presence in one of the world's fastest-growing technology markets.
The rollout appears on Claude's website and mobile apps for some Indian users, although payments through India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) are not yet available.
India becomes key market for Claude
According to Anthropic, India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the chatbot's second-largest market after the US.
Users in India have long requested local pricing, as dollar-denominated subscriptions required currency conversion and international payment methods.
Claude plans now priced in rupees
Anthropic has listed:
- Claude Pro at ₹2,000 per month when billed annually.
- Claude Max starting at ₹11,999 per month.
- Claude Team plans from ₹2,399 per seat per month.
The listed prices include local taxes, although subscription rates vary slightly between the company's website and mobile apps.
Despite the localisation, Indian users must still pay using bank cards or Apple and Google app store billing systems, as UPI support has not yet been introduced.
Anthropic expands India operations
The pricing rollout follows Anthropic's broader expansion in India.
The company opened a Bengaluru office earlier this year, appointed former Microsoft India executive Irina Ghose to lead its local business and partnered with Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services to expand enterprise AI deployments.
AI companies compete for Indian users
India has become a strategic market for global AI companies because of its large developer community and growing demand for artificial intelligence tools.
However, converting free users into paying subscribers remains challenging due to the country's price-sensitive market.
Anthropic's move follows similar localisation efforts by rivals as AI companies adapt pricing and services to strengthen their presence in India.
