Waymo restores SF robotaxi service after one-hour pause
Service resumes after power outage affected thousands in San Francisco
Waymo resumed its robotaxi service in San Francisco after temporarily suspending operations for about an hour due to a power outage affecting thousands of Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) customers across the city.
According to a screenshot shared on social media, the Alphabet-owned company informed riders that service had been "temporarily paused" and that freeway routes were unavailable.
A Waymo spokesperson said the company paused operations to assess the scale of the outage and coordinate with local officials before restoring normal service.
Previous outages have also disrupted Waymo operations
Power outages have caused issues for Waymo before, including a December blackout that left several robotaxis stalled on city streets. A similar incident also disrupted traffic during San Francisco's Fourth of July fireworks.
The repeated disruptions have prompted Mayor Daniel Lurie to call for stronger state regulations governing autonomous vehicles during emergencies.
