Former South Florida pastor charged over fatal crash involving daughter

Former South Florida youth pastor has been charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide months after investigators said he crashed while driving at more than 100 mph, killing his 8-year-old daughter.

Joel Leiniz appeared before a Palm Beach County judge on Monday, where he was granted a $150,000 bond.

Investigators say vehicle was travelling 104 mph

According to investigators, the January crash occurred while Leiniz was driving 104 mph in a 40 mph zone with his three daughters in the back seat.

Authorities said the vehicle crashed, fatally injuring his 8-year-old daughter, Zoe. Her two sisters survived.

Judge bars contact with surviving daughters

As part of the bond conditions, the judge ordered Leiniz to have no contact with his surviving daughters while the criminal case is pending.

The Florida Department of Children and Families will oversee any visitation arrangements.

Family suffered earlier tragedy

The charges come about a year after Leiniz's wife, his high school sweetheart, died from metastatic breast cancer.

The couple had been raising their three daughters while both worked at New Covenant Church, where Leiniz served as a youth pastor.

Following the crash, Leiniz told the court he had stopped working to spend more time with his family.

Investigation continues

CBS News Miami reported that no one answered the door when it visited Leiniz's home in Margate on Monday, while no one at his former church was available for comment.

Authorities have not released additional details as the criminal case remains ongoing.
