Man arrested after setting Times Square bus on fire

Fire authorities arrested a Brooklyn man on Monday after he allegedly set a school bus on fire in Times Square during celebrations following the New York Knicks' victory in the NBA Finals. Federal prosecutors charged 30-year-old Jonathan Strahs with one count of federal arson in connection with the Midtown Manhattan incident.

The FDNY announced the arrest in an official press release, confirming that federal law enforcement officers took Strahs into custody at his Brooklyn home on Monday morning. The incident unfolded following the Knicks' Game 5 championship victory over the Spurs, which marked the team's first title win in 53 years. Surveillance video recorded at approximately 2:47 a.m. captured an individual, identified by authorities as Strahs, entering and exiting a school bus parked on West 42nd Street, between 8th and 9th avenues.

A fire broke out inside the vehicle shortly after the individual exited, rapidly expanding to engulf the bus before spreading to an adjacent vehicle. Emergency crews eventually extinguished the blaze. The destroyed vehicle belonged to a chartered convoy assigned to transport sports fans from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to MetLife Stadium for FIFA World Cup matches. FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore condemned the act, noting that setting the fire on a crowded public street placed nearby pedestrians and emergency responders in direct danger.

The arson incident occurred alongside widespread chaos across Midtown Manhattan following the basketball final. The NYPD made 63 arrests during the post-game celebrations, during which individuals damaged five police squad cars and destroyed several other buses in the transport convoy using baseball bats. Multiple violent altercations erupted throughout the area, including an incident in Times Square where a 17-year-old suffered a gunshot wound. Court records do not indicate whether Strahs has retained legal representation or entered a formal plea regarding the arson charge.
