TikTok Shop brands adopt generative AI to replace creators
Generative AI videos rise across TikTok Shop as brands automate product promotions to cut costs
Brands and TikTok's automated advertisement system are increasingly embracing videos featuring artificial intelligence influencers and product imagery to drive sales. The technological shift threatens the livelihoods of side-hustle creators who produce shoppable videos to earn commissions through the platform's e-commerce affiliate program.
Business Insider reported that generative AI tools imitate and iterate on successful creator videos, generating synthetic posts that promote flash sales and short-term price drops. Socialscale.ai founder Fabian Ouwehand likened affiliate creator content to small roadside billboards, noting that automated tools allow companies to create promotional posts at a fraction of traditional production costs. Automated ad systems surface these synthetic videos across user feeds, yielding significant returns, including tens of thousands of dollars in product sales for a single AI creator.
The rapid rise of synthetic influencers is altering the TikTok Shop ecosystem, prompting internal discussions among platform employees. Marketers revealed that several brands use generative AI to recreate top-performing influencer posts or publish hundreds of monthly videos without paying creators or supplying free product samples. However, consumer backlash and reputation risks led appliance manufacturer SharkNinja to prohibit creators from utilising AI in its affiliate program. Social Tale chief executive officer Ashley Wright noted that while some brands eagerly deploy AI to boost sales, others worry about brand damage.
Legal and quality concerns also challenge the expanding synthetic marketplace. TikTok Shop governance officials reported instances of fraudulent sellers using generative AI to create fake storefronts for non-existent products. Additionally, advertising lawyers warned that synthetic influencers claiming to use products could violate Federal Trade Commission regulations regarding honest consumer testimonials. Despite current viewer resistance to unnatural voices and exaggerated product demonstrations, industry experts predict that blue-chip brands will continue adopting generative AI videos as the technology improves.
