A US-based physician specialising in longevity medicine has said that regular sunlight exposure plays a far greater role in long-term health than commonly believed, citing its impact on hormone regulation, vitamin D production and cardiovascular function.

Dr Vassily Eliopoulos, known online as Dr Vass, shared his insights in an Instagram video posted on 21 July, outlining three key mechanisms through which sunlight influences overall wellbeing.

Sunlight benefits circadian mechanism

According to the physician, exposure to natural light within half an hour of waking helps regulate the body's internal clock, which governs hormone release and metabolic activity throughout the day. He explained that missing this early light exposure — for instance, by moving straight from a dark bedroom into a car or office — can gradually throw the body's rhythm off balance, potentially raising the risk of insulin resistance and inflammation over time. He noted that shift workers, who experience significant disruption to natural light patterns, tend to show higher rates of metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.

Sunlight opens up vitamin D pathway

Dr Vass also highlighted sunlight's role in vitamin D production through ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure on the skin, noting that around four in ten adults have insufficient levels, a deficiency linked to weakened immunity and cognitive decline. He added that sunlight-generated vitamin D tends to be absorbed and released more steadily by the body compared with supplements.

Sunlight opens up nitric oxide pathway

A third, lesser-known benefit involves ultraviolet A (UVA) light, which he said stimulates the release of nitric oxide stored in the skin. This compound helps relax blood vessels and can improve blood pressure and cardiovascular function within minutes of exposure.

Sunlight exposure protocol

  • For those largely confined indoors, Dr Vass recommended the following routine:
  • 10 to 20 minutes of morning sunlight, combined with a 30-minute walk outdoors, eyes open and without sunglasses
  • 10 to 30 minutes of midday UVB exposure on large areas of skin when the UV index is above three
