Deep sea cave diving expedition in the Maldives ends in tragedy

A deep sea cave exploration leaves five dead, sparking a major international investigation

A deep sea cave diving excursion in the Maldives has resulted in a devastating tragedy, claimed by officials as the nation's largest diving accident on record. Four Italian tourists and their instructor disappeared on May 14 while exploring a cave in the Vavu Atoll. The dive took place nearly 165 feet below the surface, a depth that exceeds the country's legal recreational diving limit. The instructor's body was located near the cave entrance on the day of the disappearance, while the remaining four divers were discovered deep inside the cave four days later following an intense multinational recovery effort.

Tragically, the search mission claimed another life when a military diver died from decompression sickness. Investigators are looking into whether standard recreational gear was improperly used instead of specialized technical equipment, leading the Maldives government to suspend the license of the Italian tour operator's dive boat.
