Demi Lovato advocates for awareness after sharing bipolar journey
The star hopes sharing her journey will encourage understanding and reduce stigma around mental health
Demi Lovato has bravely spoken out about living with bipolar disorder, emphasizing that she is “not ashamed” of her diagnosis.
The singer and actress was diagnosed at 18 after seeking treatment, following years of struggles with emotional instability, eating disorders, and substance use.
Lovato has consistently highlighted the importance of understanding and accepting her condition. “I’m not ashamed of it. I think having bipolar disorder has been a big part of my life,” she said. She added, “When I took control of my illness, I started to take control of my life.”
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by extreme mood swings, including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
Manic episodes can involve euphoria, impulsivity, and heightened energy, while depressive episodes may cause deep sadness, fatigue, and loss of interest in daily life.
Treatment is crucial and often includes medication such as mood stabilizers, psychotherapy like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and lifestyle adjustments, including regular sleep, stress management, and avoiding substances.
Lovato stresses that consistency is key: ongoing care and support are essential to managing the condition and maintaining mental well-being.
