New dad injured by wrong-way driver on route to newborn in NICU
Katrina Cook provided details about the February 22 crash on a GoFundMe page
A mother in Australia recalls the “terrifying” incident when her son was involved in a head-on collision on his way to the hospital to visit his newborn daughter, who was born with a rare congenital anomaly.
Katrina Cook provided details about the February 22 crash on a GoFundMe page, created to support her son, Jaylen Cook, and his family with medical costs and to replace his totaled vehicle.
“Jaylen was driving back to Ronald McDonald House in Brisbane after finishing a 12-hour night shift in Tweed Heads,” Katrina detailed, explaining that Jaylen and his partner, Mikayla, are residing there while their daughter, Madeline, undergoes surgeries and remains in a NICU at a hospital nearby.
Katrina described how another driver had allegedly been speeding over 60 mph in the wrong lane, hitting Jaylen’s “ute” (utility vehicle) head-on, a vehicle she mentioned holds sentimental value.
“As the pictures demonstrate, it's nothing less than miraculous that he made it. Jaylen suffered head trauma, lacerations, and severe bruising, and continues to endure substantial physical pain,” Katrina noted regarding Jaylen’s condition.
She continued, “The accident’s trauma has also resulted in significant emotional and mental challenges. At that moment, we were uncertain if he would sustain long-term injuries, and it was an extremely distressing ordeal for our family.”
Jaylen reflected on the accident during an interview with nine.com.au.
“Suddenly, out of nowhere, I saw two headlights barreling towards me — there was barely any time to respond," Jaylen recounted.
His mother highlighted the crash’s “heartbreaking” effect on her son.
“Jaylen is presently unable to work, which has added severe financial stress on their young family,” Katrina explained, describing her reasons for starting the GoFundMe. “Additionally, his ute — a cherished present from his late father — was totally wrecked.”
She added, “The car was not only special but also crucial for his commute to work and for managing daily life away from home.”
