Minnesota man arrested after shooting seventeen year old boy

Authorities in Minnesota have arrested a 61-year-old man in connection with the shooting of a 17-year-old boy in St. Paul.

Gyaw Way was detained after an incident on 7 April, which left the teenager with life-threatening gunshot wounds to his liver and lung.

According to court documents cited by KARE 11 and KSTP, police discovered the victim screaming in pain inside a vehicle. Way has since been charged with felony first-degree assault following the attack.

The shooting appears rooted in a personal grievance held by Way against the teenager’s father. Witnesses alleged that Way blamed the man for a house fire in December that claimed the life of Way's own son.

Although the St. Paul Fire Department ruled that the blaze was accidental, Way reportedly believed otherwise. Prosecutors allege Way lured the father and son to his residence under the pretence of repaying borrowed money.

Once they arrived, Way allegedly entered the vehicle and shot the child. The father, who has an amputated leg, was tragically unable to render immediate physical assistance to his son due to his disability.

During his arrest, Way reportedly spoke in English, stating "sorry," "baby die," and "no accident," suggesting a retaliatory motive. One of Way's other sons is also accused of hiding the firearm used in the assault.

While the 17-year-old is expected to survive his injuries, the investigation into the family’s mental health and the circumstances of the shooting continues.

This violent event follows the tragic loss of Way's son, with no further criminal records currently linking the father to previous offences.
