Husband smothers wife to death after chilling threat: 'Looked directly into her eyes'

A 51-year-old Utah man faces a potential lifetime prison sentence for smothering his wife to death following physical abuse, then claiming she died due to liver complications.

Eric Larson Sampson received a sentence on Monday ranging from 15 years to life imprisonment for the fatality of his 47-year-old wife Niki Sampson in their St. George home. He was found guilty of murder and additional charges in February.

Police discovered Niki Sampson's bruised and injured body at their residence on September 1, 2024.

Her husband had a prolonged record of domestic violence against her, and prior to her death, he had threatened her.

However, Eric Sampson maintained his claim that she passed away due to medical issues, continuing this assertion even during his sentencing after the conviction.

"I wasn't aiming to accuse anyone. I genuinely cared for her and truly wanted to understand what happened," he stated, as per a courtroom account by local NBC affiliate KSL.

District Judge Eric Gentry expressed shock at the defendant's apparent lack of remorse.

"Mr. Sampson appears to be deeply entrenched in denial, self-centeredness, and sees himself as the victim," he reportedly commented.

The adult children of the Sampson family spoke during the sentencing, expressing sorrow over losing their mother, and mentioned that their children would not know their grandmother.

"He desired my mother's death and sought her life insurance payout," said Shaley Encinias, according to KSL. "He observed my mother's struggle, looked her in the eyes, and ended her life."

Police discovered the woman deceased. Authorities considered the circumstances of her passing suspicious, leading to Sampson's prompt arrest.
