Ramin Bahrani to helm Netflix Texas thriller 'The Rancher'

Following the completion of Vegas: A Love Story, a romantic thriller featuring Maika Monroe and Brandon Sklenar, Ramin Bahrani continues his journey in the thriller genre with The Rancher, a Netflix movie inspired by a screenplay from Melanie Toast, which he will rewrite and direct, with production led by Toby Jaffe for RDV Films.

Bahrani is set to work on this new film after directing Last Meals, a previously disclosed drama about a chef on death row, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Boyd Holbrook.

Once titled Devil’s Rope, The Rancher is a suspense-driven story centered around a female protagonist in rural Texas, with plot details still under wraps.

Toast and Jaffe have partnered again on this project following their collaboration on the upcoming Cliffhanger remake, directed by Carry-On‘s Jaume Collet-Serra. We were the first to announce the spec sale last May.

The Oscar-nominated Iranian-American director, known for hits like The White Tiger, 99 Homes, and Chop Shop, began filming Vegas: A Love Story earlier this year.

Touted as his most mainstream project so far, the movie also stars Paul Dano, Michael Shannon, and Judy Greer, and is produced by A/Vantage Pictures, Sugar Rush Pictures, and Noruz Films, with primary funding from Juniper Productions.

Bahrani is represented by WME, Untitled Entertainment, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole, and Ziffren Brittenham.

Other future projects from Jaffe’s RDV Films include Netflix’s 6 Minutes to Freedom, based on the non-fiction book recounting the 1989 Delta Force mission to rescue an American hostage in Panama, and New Regency’s Panic Officer, an espionage thriller inspired by a screenplay from Ben Ripley, which we announced.
