Heather Graham criticises 'uncomfortable' new reality of Hollywood sex scenes
Graham discussed her thoughts on working with intimacy coordinators since #MeToo Movement began
Heather Graham expressed her mixed emotions about Hollywood's new "awkward" way of handling intimate scenes.
Graham discussed her thoughts on working with intimacy coordinators since the #MeToo Movement began.
“I believe the MeToo movement was incredible, and I appreciate the good intention behind intimacy coordinators. But it feels strange when you've become accustomed to working without them, and then there's suddenly another person in the room just observing while you’re pretending to be involved in a sex scene,” she mentioned to Us Weekly. “It’s a little awkward.”
“I understand they have positive intentions and aim to support and safeguard actors,” Graham went on. “However, as an actor, sometimes I feel like saying, ‘Could we please have fewer people around?’”
“I once had an intimacy coordinator who began giving me directions on how to act in a sex scene,” Graham recalled.
“They suggested, ‘When doing this, you might consider this.’ And I thought, ‘You’re not the director, okay? I didn’t ask for instructions on performing sex scenes.’”
“I just thought, ‘Please stop,’” she added. “I felt like saying, ‘This should be communicated to the director… because I prefer not having conflicting directions.’ It's confusing.”
Graham started her career with small roles in commercials and TV, moving on to teen movies like “License to Drive” and “Drugstore Cowboy.”
Her breakthrough came with “Boogie Nights,” “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” and “Bowfinger.”
In 2009, Graham participated in the hit movie “The Hangover.” She continues to act in films and TV while branching into writing and directing. Her latest film, “They Will Kill You,” is set to premiere on March 27.
The “Killing Me Softly” actress shared that with her long-standing career, she feels she doesn't need the guidance of an intimacy coordinator.
