Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively donate $25K at Jonathan Groff’s final Broadway performance
The donation supported Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS during the sold-out finale
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively turned a night at the theater into a meaningful act of generosity.
The couple attended the final performance of Just in Time on Sunday, March 29, where Jonathan Groff took his last bow as music legend Bobby Darin at New York City’s Circle in the Square Theatre.
Following the show, Reynolds joined a live auction benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, bidding on a piece of memorabilia from the production, Darin’s hat.
Starting at $10,000, the actor quickly raised the stakes, prompting cheers from the audience as Groff and the cast matched each new bid with celebratory high kicks onstage.
Reynolds continued increasing his offer — $15,000, $20,000 — before ultimately landing on a $25,000 donation.
“$25,000 — no kicks. Maybe just, like, something else,” Reynolds joked, drawing laughter from the crowd.
In a heartfelt moment, Groff stepped off the stage, personally handed over the hat to Reynolds, and embraced him, marking the end of his run in the show with both humor and emotion.
Groff’s final performance concluded a year-long stint in the critically acclaimed musical, which traces Bobby Darin’s rise from teen idol to global star.
Reflecting on the role previously, Groff described performing the show as a deeply personal journey, saying each night onstage “feels like a gift.”
The production is set to continue with Matthew Morrison stepping into the role for a limited run beginning April 1, followed by Jeremy Jordan later in April.
