Brian Cox sparks backlash with harsh remarks on Margot Robbie’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ role

Veteran actor Brian Cox has stirred controversy after publicly criticizing Margot Robbie and her performance in the latest film adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

The high-budget romantic drama, released globally on February 13, 2026, features Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw opposite Jacob Elordi.

However, Cox has questioned both the casting and portrayal of the character.

In an interview with The Times published on April 3, the 79-year-old actor did not hold back while discussing Robbie’s role.

“Margot Robbie is far too beautiful for that role,” Cox said, suggesting that the character of Catherine required a different kind of presence.

He added that he felt “there should be something more of the Gypsy about her,” before acknowledging, “it’s wrong of me to judge, it may be a brilliant film.”

Cox also aimed Robbie’s accent in the film, mocking her delivery by mimicking lines from the movie in an exaggerated tone.

His remarks quickly drew attention online, adding to the growing discourse surrounding the film’s casting choices and performances.

The outspoken Succession star made the comments while promoting his directorial debut, Glenrothan.

During the same conversation, he reportedly shared blunt opinions about several other industry figures, including filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and actors Kevin Spacey, Johnny Depp and Edward Norton.

Neither Robbie nor the other figures mentioned have publicly responded to Cox’s comments so far.
