Michael Patrick King predicts cult status for 'And Just Like That' follow-up
Michael Patrick King believes his recent series will eventually grow in cultural relevance
The "Sex and the City" co-creator Michael Patrick King has expressed a firm belief that the follow-up series, "And Just Like That...", will eventually achieve cult status despite initial mixed reviews.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, the writer and executive producer suggested that perceptions of the three-season "requel" may shift over time, drawing a direct parallel to the delayed appreciation of his other HBO project, "The Comeback".
King noted that while the revival was often panned or viewed as a "hate-watch" by certain fans, its exploration of women in their fifties remains culturally significant.
"If 'The Comeback' has taught me anything, it’s that perceptions can change over the years," he explained, noting that "And Just Like That..." will potentially age well as society catches up to its themes.
He highlighted that while the original series challenged expectations for 35-year-old women, the new iteration confronts the societal notion that 55-year-old women should avoid wearing tulle or embracing change.
Reflecting on the "human touch" required to evolve such iconic figures, King admitted surprise at how much fans wanted the characters to remain "frozen in time."
He argued that it was a deliberate and necessary choice to "break" the original format to create something new, rather than attempting to replicate the past.
Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon, the series concluded its run in 2025 after reuniting the original trio to face the realities of middle age in New York City. King is currently overseeing the third season of "The Comeback" on HBO.
