OpenAI suspends UK Stargate project over regulatory and energy cost issues
OpenAI's Stargate initiative in the United Kingdom is currently on pause
OpenAI's Stargate initiative in the United Kingdom is currently on pause, citing energy costs and the regulatory landscape as reasons.
The American AI firm announced the large-scale infrastructure venture in September, planning to utilise up to 8,000 GPUs alongside Nscale and Nvidia. Politico reported on Wednesday about the project's suspension.
"We remain interested in developing Stargate UK and will proceed when favorable conditions like regulation and energy costs align with our infrastructure investment plans," an OpenAI representative communicated to CNBC.
Nscale opted to withhold comments when contacted by CNBC. Nvidia has been asked for their statement.
OpenAI and Nscale are actively discussing future possibilities for the project, someone familiar with the situation mentioned to CNBC.
"We believe the UK holds significant promise for its AI future," added the OpenAI representative.
"London hosts our largest research center outside the US, and we align with the Government's AI leadership goals."
"Meanwhile, we are channeling our resources into expanding talent and presence in the region while honoring our commitments under the MOU with the Government to integrate advanced AI in UK public services," the announcement elaborated.
