Viaplay unveils US launch of Black Sands' second and final season

The final and second season of Black Sands is returning to the Viaplay Streaming Service in the US.

The initial season of this dark Icelandic crime series received much acclaim, earning multiple award nominations at home and getting favorable critiques from the English press.

Season 2 is set to premiere on the Nordic drama-centric Viaplay Streaming Service on May 14, with two episodes of the eight-part series released weekly.

In addition to the Season 2 release news, we're sharing a first-look at the trailer for the new season and a hint at what audiences can expect.

With Iceland’s iconic black sands as the backdrop, the first season followed Anita, a troubled police investigator portrayed by Aldis Amah Hamilton (The Valhalla Murders), who is also a co-writer of the series.

Hamilton’s character is drawn back to her hometown, where she starts to track down a serial killer who has been killing for years, camouflaging the crimes as accidental deaths.

"Perhaps it's time you learned the truth,” says the voiceover as a sweeping view of the black sands introduces the Season 2 trailer.

The second season resumes fourteen months after the first season’s events. Set in a gloomy Arctic winter, the intrigue deepens with the mysterious death of an elderly woman and an additional startling murder.

As the investigation progresses, the grim secrets of the local town come to light.

Viaplay Content Distribution acquired the SVOD rights for the US, Germany, and the UK, where Season 1 aired on UKTV.

All3Media International handles the distribution, and the series is in Icelandic with English subtitles. Season 2 will also premiere in Germany, beginning May 18.
