Eddie Murphy fights back tears at star-studded AFI tribute night

Eddie Murphy reached a major milestone in his decades-long career, becoming the latest recipient of the prestigious AFI Life Achievement Award during a star-studded ceremony in Hollywood.

The 65-year-old comedy icon was honored with the 51st award at the Dolby Theatre on April 18, celebrating a career that has spanned more than five decades across film, television, and stand-up comedy.

Taking to the stage, Murphy became visibly emotional as he addressed the audience.

“I almost teared up… I’m going to get backstage and cry,” he said, drawing warm applause from the crowd.

Despite the heartfelt moment, Murphy also brought his signature humor to the speech, joking about the timing of the recognition.

Referencing past honorees like Mel Brooks and Francis Ford Coppola, he quipped that recipients often have to wait until much later in life to receive the accolade, noting that some were honored in their 80s and even 90s.

The evening doubled as a celebration of Murphy’s enduring influence, with tributes from fellow comedians and collaborators, including Martin Lawrence, Dave Chappelle, and Kenan Thompson, who reflected on his impact on generations of performers.

Adding to the night’s highlights, Jennifer Hudson delivered a special musical tribute, performing songs from Dreamgirls, the film in which she starred alongside Murphy.

The ceremony honoring Murphy’s legacy is set to air on Netflix on May 31, offering audiences a closer look at the celebration of one of entertainment’s most influential figures.
