Olivia Rodrigo reveals why she chose ‘Drop Dead’ to kick off her new album
Rodrigo is set to release 'You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love' on June 12
Olivia Rodrigo has revealed why she selected her new track “Drop Dead” as the lead single from her upcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love, describing it as the starting point of the record’s emotional journey.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s New Music Daily, the Grammy-winning artist said the song represents the “first chapter” in the story she aims to tell through the album.
Rodrigo explained that “Drop Dead” captures the emotions of a first date, blending excitement with vulnerability.
She described the track as reflecting the nervousness, insecurity and exhilaration that come with developing feelings for someone new, calling it a natural “new beginning” for the project.
While the single leans into a brighter, more joyful tone, Rodrigo hinted that the rest of the album will explore a broader emotional range.
She noted that the feelings throughout the record “ebb and flow,” with “Drop Dead” serving as the “jumping-off point” for what follows.
The singer released the track on April 17 alongside a music video filmed at the Palace of Versailles, created in collaboration with director Petra Collins.

In a separate interview with British Vogue, she also opened up about the creative challenges behind the album, revealing that writing from a place of happiness pushed her artistically.
Despite being in a positive relationship at the time, Rodrigo said many songs still lean toward “sad love songs,” adding that her favourite romantic tracks often carry elements of longing or uncertainty.
