6 daily habits fueling stress: From screen time to sleep

Stress is often associated with major life events such as deadlines, conflict, or sudden pressure, but experts say it can also build gradually through small everyday behaviors that seem harmless on the surface.

Sanjay Desai, author, entrepreneur and founder of ConsciousLeap, says many people unknowingly create a constant background level of stress through routine habits that keep the nervous system in a reactive state.

One of the most common triggers, he explains, is checking the phone immediately after waking up.

Starting the day with notifications, emails and messages forces the brain to respond to outside demands before it has had a chance to settle, setting an anxious tone for the hours ahead.

Another overlooked source of stress is saying yes to commitments out of obligation.

Desai notes that repeatedly agreeing to tasks when mentally or physically stretched creates a lingering feeling of overload that does not disappear once the conversation ends.

Screen exposure until bedtime is another contributor. Without a proper wind-down period, the brain remains stimulated, sleep quality suffers, and the body carries unresolved tension into the next day.

Desai also warns against treating rest as something to be earned only after productivity.

Ignoring the body’s need for recovery can slowly lead to exhaustion and emotional burnout.

In addition, constantly talking about problems without taking action may trap the mind in repetitive worry, while skipping meals or eating hurriedly at a desk can trigger blood sugar fluctuations that worsen anxiety and irritability.

According to Desai, these habits may seem minor individually, but together they create a steady accumulation of hidden stress.

Addressing them one by one can make a significant difference in improving daily mental balance and emotional resilience.
