Robert Downey Jr. has broken his silence regarding the motivations behind his shocking return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villainous Doctor Doom.
Speaking on the Conversations for our Daughter podcast, the 61-year-old actor explained that his decision was heavily influenced by his recent experiences outside the superhero genre, specifically his Oscar-winning turn in Oppenheimer.
Downey noted that without the "endorsement" of Christopher Nolan and the experience of playing Lewis Strauss, returning to Marvel might not have felt as creatively fulfilling.
The actor, who famously portrayed Tony Stark for over a decade, described his new character as a "facilitator," though he admitted he is still uncovering the nuances of the role.
"What’s interesting to me is digging into what happens backstage at the world, not being afraid of scale," he explained. Despite his familiarity with the Marvel machine, Downey emphasised that he is not taking the opportunity for granted.
He revealed that he has been "working his ass off" to ensure he is fully prepared for the part, even remarking that his level of focus would have satisfied legendary director Sidney Lumet.
The announcement of Downey's casting as Victor von Doom has sparked intense speculation regarding the plot of Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to hit cinemas globally on 18 December 2026.
This casting represents a significant pivot for the franchise as it enters a new phase, leveraging one of its most bankable stars in an entirely different capacity.
As production nears, fans are eager to see how the man who started the MCU as its greatest hero will now challenge its current roster of defenders.
