Domino's delivery driver allegedly hits man over tipping dispute
Police confirm Zachary Nicholus Walton became upset after not receiving a gratuity from customers
A Domino's delivery driver in Missouri was taken into custody after allegedly striking a customer with his vehicle following a dispute over a tip.
Zachary Nicholus Walton, 36, was booked into the Callaway County Jail without bond on charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and leaving the scene of an accident.
On Wednesday, officers from the Fulton Police Department responded to a private residence where a witness alleged that Walton "became upset" and "struck" the victim after a verbal altercation.
According to a statement of probable cause, the victim was forced to jump onto the hood of the car to avoid further injury.
Video footage from the scene reportedly captured Walton initiating the confrontation and shouting profanities before reversing his car and then accelerating forward into the victim.
Police later located the suspect at a Domino's outlet, where he allegedly admitted to driving toward the man in an attempt to "scare him" before fleeing.
Officials noted that "the defendant poses a danger to the victim and the community," highlighting his apparent disregard for public safety during the incident.
Walton, who has a prior conviction for domestic assault, made his first court appearance via video link on Friday.
While the victim reported pain and visible injuries to his hand and leg, the injuries were fortunately not life-threatening.
The case has sparked significant discussion regarding the safety of service workers and customers alike.
Following his initial appearance without counsel, Walton is scheduled for a follow-up hearing on 6 May, as the investigation into the assault continues.
