Florida mother Alejandra Cruz Segundo charged in toddler’s death
Police records state Alejandra Cruz Segundo failed to prevent her toddler from entering the road
A Florida woman has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect six months after her two-year-old son was killed in a tragic traffic accident.
Alejandra Cruz Segundo, 32, was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on Friday, following an investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol into the October 2025 incident.
Her son, Damien Alexander Cruz Segundo, died at the scene after being struck by a Ford F-450 pickup truck near the family’s home in St. Petersburg.
According to the arrest affidavit, the toddler "darted into the roadway" while a vehicle driven by Christian Javier Rodriguez was stopped in an eastbound lane.
As the truck began to move, the child was run over; the driver reportedly told officials he could not see the boy due to his small stature.
While troopers found no indication of impairment on the part of the driver and filed no criminal charges against him, the focus of the investigation shifted to parental supervision.
Witnesses alleged that Cruz Segundo frequently allowed her children to play in the front yard adjacent to the street without adult oversight.
The arrest report states that Cruz Segundo "should have known" that leaving young children unsupervised near a busy roadway could lead to serious injury or death.
This lack of supervision was cited as the primary factor in the fatal collision. Alejandra Cruz Segundo is currently being held in Pinellas County as legal proceedings begin.
The case serves as a sombre reminder of the legal responsibilities of guardians regarding child safety in high-risk environments.
