HBO’s Harry Potter reboot gets early season 2 renewal before premiere

HBO has officially renewed its upcoming Harry Potter reboot for a second season ahead of the series premiere later this year.

The highly anticipated adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s beloved wizarding saga is set to debut this Christmas with a retelling of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, while production for the second season, based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is expected to begin this autumn.

In a statement, showrunner Francesca Gardiner confirmed that writer Jon Brown has been promoted to co-showrunner as the production expands into overlapping schedules for future seasons.

“As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish Season 1 by Christmas and to return to production for Season 2 this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum,” Gardiner said.

She also praised Brown for his creative contribution to the series, noting that the pair previously worked together on Succession.

Brown, meanwhile, described working on the first season as “a joy” and expressed excitement about continuing the journey with the next chapter of the story.

“It has been a joy to write on Philosopher’s Stone and I’d like to thank Francesca and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey,” he said.

“Seems you’re never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts.”

The new adaptation will introduce Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter alongside Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

The cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
