Mikayla Matthews defends herself after mormon wives fan backlash
The reality star says she is 'fed up' with what she calls online double standards
Mikayla Matthews is pushing back against online criticism over her perceived lack of support for her The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives castmates, saying she is “fed up” with the double standards surrounding her behavior.
The 26-year-old reality star addressed the backlash in a series of comments posted on May 6 and May 7 under an Instagram fan account dedicated to the Hulu series, where discussions about cast dynamics have intensified in recent weeks.
The controversy stemmed from a post referencing castmate Jessi Draper’s personal struggles and Taylor Frankie Paul’s ongoing legal situation, with some users suggesting members of the group had stopped publicly showing support for one another on social media.
Matthews initially responded to the post with a brief “Interesting..” — a comment that quickly drew attention from fans, some of whom accused her of inserting herself into drama after several weeks of silence.
When one user questioned her timing, writing that it was “so odd” for her to comment after a delay, Matthews fired back bluntly: “because I’m fed up.”
She later responded to another critic who accused her of being “very rude” and urged her to focus on her “healing journey” and personal life instead of commenting on others.
Matthews defended her position, pointing to what she described as unfair expectations placed on her compared to others in the cast.
“Gotta love a biased double standard,” she wrote. “I’d genuinely love to see how you’d handle being in the same position we’re in. If you feel entitled to comment on our life, don’t be surprised when we respond.”
She added that she is not interested in tailoring her opinions for public approval, writing that she does not “switch up” her stance to “save face online,” and advised critics to “scroll instead of leaving a snide comment.”
The online exchange comes amid ongoing attention surrounding the MomTok-centered reality series, which has seen cast tensions play out both on and off screen.
Jessi Draper has recently been open about her divorce, while Taylor Frankie Paul has faced legal challenges linked to alleged domestic violence incidents.
The situation also follows production developments on the series. Earlier this month, People confirmed that filming on season five had resumed after a brief production pause reportedly linked to cast tensions and the fallout from Paul’s legal issues.
