Katy Perry, Lisa's World Cup gig announcement sparks fierce backlash

The official lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremonies has been announced, and the list of global superstars has ignited a passionate debate among fans.

According to a report, a diverse group of artists is set to perform across the three host nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The historic tournament, the first to be hosted by three countries, will feature a trio of opening ceremonies. The US ceremony in Los Angeles will see performances from pop icon Katy Perry, BLACKPINK’s Lisa, rapper Future, Brazilian singer Anitta, and Nigerian star Rema.

Canada’s show in Toronto will feature homegrown talents Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, and Alessia Cara. Meanwhile, Mexico City will host Colombian superstar J Balvin, Spanish-Mexican singer Belinda, and South African sensation Tyla, who is uniquely slated to perform in both Mexico and the US.

Fans react to the lineup

While the announcement aimed to build excitement, the comment section on post quickly filled with mixed reviews. Several users took aim at the selection of Katy Perry to represent the USA.

"Stop letting Katy Perry rep USA," one user commented, while another added, "ugh why Katy perry". The overall list also drew criticism, with one person writing, "What a boring lineup!"

However, other artists were met with celebration. Fans of K-pop star Lisa, who will make history as the first female K-pop solo artist to perform at a World Cup opening, shared their excitement.

"LALISAAAA," wrote one fan, accompanied by heart emojis. Supporters also cheered for Tyla and Anitta, celebrating the international flavour of the event.

Despite the backlash, the star-packed list ensures the 2026 World Cup will kick off with a memorable, albeit controversial, bang.
