Sally Field recalls humorous family story from set of 'Steel Magnolias'
The actress reflects on her time on set with Hollywood stars while caring for her infant son
Sally Field has shared a lighthearted and affectionate reflection on her time filming the classic 1989 drama Steel Magnolias, revealing a family anecdote involving her youngest son, Samuel Greisman, that has resurfaced in recent comments.
The Oscar-winning actress recalled the close-knit atmosphere on set, where she worked alongside a star-studded cast including Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis, describing the experience as “wonderful” and deeply memorable.
Field, now 79, said her youngest son, Samuel—whom she shares with producer Alan Greisman—was often present during filming as an infant, even appearing in a wrap party photo where she held him while surrounded by her co-stars.
She noted with humour that her son has often joked that growing up around the all-female energy of the set may have influenced his identity, adding that he “probably” attributes his sexuality in part to that environment.
Samuel, who has previously spoken publicly about his upbringing, has described being closely connected to his mother’s career, recalling how different film projects marked stages of his childhood and family life.
He has also reflected on their open and candid relationship, including conversations that later influenced creative work involving his mother, highlighting their close emotional bond.
Field has long spoken proudly of her three sons—Peter, Eli, and Samuel—whom she shares with two former partners. In earlier remarks, she described Samuel as uniquely gentle and creative, saying he has always had a distinct sensitivity and warmth.
The actress has often emphasised that her children’s individuality was never shaped by expectation, but by nature, adding that each of them grew into “kind and loving” adults in their own way.
