Samsung breaks silence on Dua Lipa’s multimillion-dollar lawsuit over unauthorized photo claim
The singer is seeking more than $15 million in damages in a new federal lawsuit
Samsung Electronics has responded publicly after Dua Lipa filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit accusing the company of using her image on television packaging without permission.
The South Korean tech giant denied allegations of unauthorized use, saying the image in question had been supplied through a third-party content partner that assured the company all necessary rights had been secured.
In a statement released Tuesday, May 12, Samsung said Dua Lipa’s image was used in 2025 to promote content available through Samsung TV Plus, the company’s free streaming service.
“Ms. Lipa's image was used in 2025 to reflect the content of our third-party partners that is available on Samsung TVs,” the company stated, adding that the material was “originally provided by a content partner.”
Samsung further claimed it received “explicit assurance” from the partner that permission had been obtained for all uses, including retail packaging.
The statement comes after the Levitating singer filed a lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for Central California, seeking more than $15 million in damages.
The complaint accuses Samsung of violating copyright, trademark and publicity rights laws.
According to court filings, Lipa’s legal team alleges the company used a backstage photograph taken at a music festival in Austin in 2024 without her authorization.
The image was reportedly featured on packaging for televisions sold in the United States last year.
Samsung rejected claims that it intentionally misused the singer’s likeness and stressed that it respects intellectual property protections.
“We have actively sought and remain open to a constructive resolution with Ms. Lipa’s team,” the company said.
The tech company also revealed that after concerns were raised by Lipa’s representatives in July 2025, it suspended production of the packaging, replaced the imagery and entered mediation discussions with the singer’s legal team.
Despite those efforts, the dispute ultimately escalated into a lawsuit.
Neither Dua Lipa nor her representatives have publicly commented further since the legal filing became public.
