Christopher Nolan defends Travis Scott casting: Rapper's role linked to 'oral poetry' of ancient epics
Christopher Nolan explains casting Travis Scott in 'The Odyssey,' linking rap to ancient oral poetry
Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has broken his silence on the surprising decision to cast rapper Travis Scott in his upcoming historical epic, "The Odyssey". He revealed the musician's background in rap was the key factor, drawing a direct line from modern hip-hop to the oral storytelling of ancient Greece.
An ancient art form
The decision to include the rapper in an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek poem was met with widespread surprise and debate online when it was first announced. Speaking in a recent interview, Nolan connected the art of rapping to the bards of the ancient world who would recite epic poems from memory. "I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap," Nolan said, according to E! News.
In the film, Scott will portray a bard, a storyteller who was central to preserving and passing down epic tales for generations before they were ever written down. This creative choice aims to bridge the gap between ancient performance and contemporary musical expression, framing Scott not just as an actor but as a modern-day bard.
A glimpse of "The Odyssey"
The upcoming film, slated to premiere on 17 July 2026, features Scott in a brief but impactful appearance in a trailer released in January. In the clip, Scott's character is seen narrating a dramatic account of the Trojan War to a captivated Telemachus, played by Tom Holland. While portraying the storyteller, he recounts the legendary tale of Odysseus, who is played by Matt Damon.
"A war, a man, a trick--a trick to break the walls of Troy," Scott says in the trailer, as scenes of the city's destruction unfold. "It burning, screaming to the ground," he continues, as reported by E! News.
The film marks Nolan's first venture into Greek mythology and boasts a star-studded cast. Alongside Damon and Holland, the epic features Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, and Zendaya.
The ambitious production was filmed in various locations including Sicily, Morocco, and the UK, and is noted for being the first feature-length film shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, promising a visually stunning experience.
A history of collaboration
While The Odyssey marks Scott's first onscreen role in a Nolan film, it is not the first time the two have worked together. The rapper previously collaborated with the acclaimed director on the soundtrack for his 2020 sci-fi thriller, Tenet. Scott's song "The Plan" was a key part of the movie's score and promotional campaign.
At the time, Nolan spoke glowingly of Scott's contribution in an interview with GQ. “His voice became the final piece of a yearlong puzzle,” Nolan said. “His insights into the musical and narrative mechanism [composer] Ludwig Goransson and I were building were immediate, insightful, and profound.” For those unversed, Scott has also previously appeared in other projects, including the animated special Trolls: Holiday in Harmony, the 2019 thriller Gully, and the experimental 2023 film Aggro Dr1ft.
Sparks of controversy
The casting of Scott is not the only element of the film to have generated online discussion. Some viewers have taken issue with the use of modern dialogue and American accents in the trailer, questioning the historical authenticity of the production. Furthermore, the design of the armour worn by some characters has drawn comparisons to the suit from Nolan's own Batman films.
The director has acknowledged that his adaptation may not please everyone, particularly scholars of the ancient Greek text. The aesthetic of the film is based on "very fragmentary archeological records," Nolan explained, noting that some creative license is necessary when depicting the distant past.
"Hopefully they'll enjoy the film, even if they don't agree with everything," he said, according to E! News. Controversial casting choices are not new in Hollywood, or even for Nolan, whose choice of Heath Ledger for the Joker in The Dark Knight was initially met with scepticism before becoming one of the most celebrated performances in cinema history.
The Odyssey is set to be a major cinematic event, with audiences eagerly awaiting to see how Nolan's unique vision and Scott's modern performance bring the ancient epic to life.
