The loved ones of 90 Day Fiancé season 12 cast member Marissa have expressed serious doubts about her fiancé, Edward, with their stark differences in financial circumstances at the centre of the controversy.
Sunday's episode of 90 Day Fiancé followed Marissa as she made preparations for Edward to travel to the United States from the Dominican Republic. The couple first crossed paths when Marissa visited his home country, during which time Edward was employed as a concierge at a hotel.
Marissa, aged 45, was raised in considerable wealth and holds a well-paid position in New York City. Edward, 32, had never set foot on an aeroplane prior to his journey to the US.
Ex-husband Michael raises green card concerns
Marissa's ex-husband, Michael — the father of her two sons — made little effort to conceal his hostility towards Edward's impending arrival and the shift it represented for their family unit. Michael openly questioned Edward's reasons for pursuing a relationship with Marissa, raising the possibility that securing a green card was his primary motivation.
Michael revealed that the wealth of Marissa's family had also been a source of tension during his own marriage to her, recalling how it left him feeling inadequate.
"You got a million-dollar home here and it can make you feel a certain way," he told her. "Look, I didn't feel like I fit in."
Marissa conceded that her parents were "affluent people."
"They've exposed me to a lot as far as traveling, really nice vacations, beautiful hotels, things like that," she explained. "I know it'll be intimidating for Edward to meet and spend time with my family because they're probably going to judge him and wonder what his intentions are, just like they did with Michael."
Michael issues warning over the couple's two sons
Michael made clear that his principal concern lay with the welfare of his children, and he did not hold back in conveying the consequences should Edward cause them distress.
"The only thing that was an absolute problem is if it's going to add stress to my boys, it's going to be both of your guys' problems," he threatened.
He added: "He needs to not come in hot and heavy and come at me a certain way because especially when it comes to my kids, I'll bite someone's face off for my kids."
Marissa expressed concern about the prospect of Michael and Edward coming face to face, describing her ex-husband as "very scary and intimidating" when roused. Nevertheless, she remained both nervous and deeply enthusiastic about welcoming Edward to the country.
Marissa and Edward reunite at New York City airport
Despite the tension surrounding his arrival, Marissa and Edward's reunion was a joyful one. She collected him from the airport in New York City and presented him with a thoughtful gift — a key to her million-dollar home, wrapped and placed inside a box.
"I don't know if I want to give this single independent woman part of me up, but I love Edward so much that I want to take this leap of faith for us," she told cameras.
Marissa also reflected upon the lengthy K1 visa process the couple had navigated in order to bring Edward to the United States.
"We appreciate now being together in this moment just because like, it's been a long time waiting and to have Edward here now just feels like probably one of the best days in our relationship so far," she said.
