Shia LaBeouf faces new charges over alleged New Orleans bar altercation

Actor Shia LaBeouf has been formally charged in connection with an alleged altercation during Mardi Gras in New Orleans, according to court records.

The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office filed three misdemeanor counts of simple battery against the 39-year-old actor on Thursday, May 21. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly took place after midnight on Feb. 17 outside a bar in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

LaBeouf was initially arrested shortly after the reported confrontation and first faced two counts of simple battery. He was later taken into custody again and hit with an additional count following further investigation, according to court filings and previous reports from the Associated Press and The Guardian.

Authorities allege the situation began after LaBeouf was ejected from a bar for causing a disturbance. A New Orleans Police Department report previously obtained by PEOPLE claims the actor struck one individual, left the scene, then returned and assaulted the same person again before allegedly attacking a second victim.

Law enforcement sources also stated at the time that he was later seen receiving medical treatment from paramedics outside the venue before being taken to hospital for unspecified injuries and subsequently arrested.

Following a court hearing in February, LaBeouf was ordered to undergo substance abuse treatment, submit to drug testing, and post a $100,000 bond. He was released under those conditions and remains out of custody.

Video footage obtained by TMZ reportedly showed the actor shirtless and being treated by emergency personnel after the incident.

One alleged victim previously told PEOPLE that LaBeouf appeared “screaming at everybody” and “lunging at” patrons, and also accused him of using homophobic slurs during the confrontation.

After his release, LaBeouf was later seen on Bourbon Street holding his jail paperwork and posting on social media, writing “Free me” on X.

The actor, known for films including Honey Boy, has faced multiple legal issues over the years, including prior arrests related to disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and misdemeanor assault.

LaBeouf has also been open about his struggles with addiction and sobriety. He moved to New Orleans in recent years seeking a fresh start following personal and professional turbulence.

Court records did not immediately specify potential penalties for the newly filed charges.
