Steve Carell’s hilarious reaction to four seasons renewal

When Netflix’s Four Seasons was picked up for a second season, Steve Carell had the perfect tongue‑in‑cheek response for his castmates.

At the season 2 premiere held at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater, Kerri Kenney‑Silver—who plays Anne—shared that the cast now has two group chats. One was created during filming in Puerto Rico for season 1, and another was started after the renewal news. Carell, whose character Nick dies at the end of season 1, wasn’t included in the second chat.

Kenney‑Silver recalled: “When we got our pickup for season 2, it started just emojis of excitement, confetti, hooray, lots of cartwheels. And then Steve just wrote in big bold letters, ‘I’M DEAD.’”

To soften the blow, Tina Fey launched a new chat called Cake by the Ocean 2, joking that it would spare Carell from feeling left out of the celebratory flood of texts. Will Forte added that the group didn’t want to overwhelm him with “hundreds of texts” about dinner plans, but they still return to the original chat with Carell when needed.

Carell’s Return in Season 2

Although Nick is gone for most of season 2, Carell does reappear in a flashback episode. Episode 6, Little Thanksgiving, revisits a COVID‑era holiday gathering, allowing Carell to reprise his role.

Kenney‑Silver described his return as “ice‑cream‑truck day,” saying the cast felt complete again when he was back on set. “We’re still all together offscreen in the sense that we’re still this group, we still exist in a text‑thread world,” she added.

Forte called Carell’s return “pure joy,” noting that the emotional impact of the storyline hit him only when he watched the episode back. “The way they throw to that flashback episode is so well done,” he said. “Then the very end of the next episode, after you’ve seen the flashback and you’re back there in the house alone, oh, that was crushing.”

Season 2 Cast

Alongside Carell’s cameo, season 2 stars Tina Fey, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney‑Silver, Colman Domingo, Erika Henningsen, and Marco Calvani.
