Sophie Turner links film role to real-life struggles after Joe Jonas split

Sophie Turner has reflected on a turbulent period in her life, appearing to allude to her highly publicized split from ex-husband Joe Jonas in a candid new interview where she spoke about “manipulation” and the emotional challenges of her twenties.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the Game of Thrones actress opened up about what she described as a “messy” decade, explaining that turning 30 earlier this year marked a turning point in her personal outlook and emotional recovery.

Turner said certain creative projects helped her process difficult experiences during that time, including her custody dispute with Jonas over their two daughters.

She referenced her role in the film Trust, noting that its storyline resonated deeply with her own life circumstances.

“I did a movie called Trust about a girl who had to go into hiding because she was being manipulated by this man she had a baby with and needed to protect her child,” she said.

“She had personal things to process and it felt like an opportunity for me to do that too.”

While Turner did not directly name Jonas in relation to the remarks, the comments come in the context of their separation in 2023 after three years of marriage and a widely reported custody arrangement involving their daughters, Willa, 5, and Delphine, 3.

The actress also spoke about embracing life after her twenties, describing a sense of relief and renewal as she and her friends entered their thirties together.

“All my best friends are my age and we went to school together and we're having a year of 30th birthdays,” she said. “We're just so happy to be out of the mess of our 20s.”

Turner added that the transition felt emotionally significant, saying she and her close circle had each experienced personal struggles but were now moving into a more stable and positive phase of life.

“Each of us has had a mini-breakdown but we all feel really positive now,” she said. “I was very ready to leave that decade of my life behind.”
