Iowa parents charged after child found confined without food, water, light or bathroom access
Court records say the deprivation resulted in both mental and physical torture for the child
Two parents from Iowa are in custody following the alleged discovery of their child confined inside their home in a severely malnourished condition.
Andrew C. Warrington, 48, and Kellie J. Warrington, 47, both of Davenport, have been charged with first-degree kidnapping, child endangerment, wilful injury, and neglect or abandonment of a dependent person, according to Scott County jail records viewed by PEOPLE. It is not yet known whether either has legal representation.
The child's identity has not been made public. However, KWQC reported that the child was ten years old.
Alleged confinement and deprivation
Andrew and Kellie allegedly "knowingly and secretly confined" the child to a bedroom without furniture for an extended period, Our Quad Cities reported on Monday, citing arrest affidavits from Scott County.
The couple are accused of denying the child access to bathroom facilities, light, food, and water throughout the period of confinement. The affidavits further allege that the pair were able to conceal the situation by preventing the child from attending medical appointments and withdrawing them from church activities, according to Our Quad Cities.
Court records stated that the prolonged absence of stimulation resulted in "both mental and physical torture," per Our Quad Cities.
Child hospitalised
The child also sustained head injuries, both KWQC and WQAD reported.
"Without medical intervention, (the child) was at risk of death," the affidavits alleged, per Our Quad Cities. The child subsequently received treatment at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Bail and court dates
Andrew and Kellie Warrington are both being held at Scott County Jail on cash-only bonds of $2 million each. Both are scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing on 16 June.
