Sabrina Elba calls out everyday racism following dispute over parking lot collision
The model claimed a woman repeatedly questioned where she was from after backing into her parked car
Sir Idris Elba’s wife Sabrina Elba has spoken out about what she described as a racist encounter after a woman allegedly backed into her parked car and then questioned where she was from during a heated exchange.
The 36-year-old model and activist shared details of the incident in a video posted to social media, saying the confrontation left her shaken and prompted her to address what she believes is a broader issue surrounding race and belonging.
According to Sabrina, the incident began when a woman reversed into her parked vehicle. When she approached the driver to discuss the collision, the interaction quickly became hostile.
Sabrina said the woman repeatedly asked, “Where are you from?” despite her initial response that she was Canadian.
Born in Montreal, Sabrina explained that she felt the question was not a genuine inquiry about her background but an attempt to challenge her right to hold the driver accountable.
Reflecting on the encounter, Sabrina argued that racism is not always overt, but can appear in subtle ways that shift attention away from the issue at hand.
“She wasn’t asking for my biography,” Sabrina said in the video. “She was trying to change the terms of the interaction.”
The model said the exchange highlighted what she views as a growing trend in which Black and brown people are made to feel that their sense of belonging can be questioned, even in everyday situations.
Sabrina also linked the incident to wider social debates in the UK, claiming that years of public discussions about immigration, identity and who belongs have contributed to an environment where some people feel increasingly comfortable challenging others based on their background.
While she acknowledged that the damage to her vehicle was minor, Sabrina said the encounter itself was what upset her most.
“The car wasn’t the issue,” she explained. “It was the reminder that for some people, your right to take up space is still negotiable.”
The wife of actor Idris Elba added that seemingly ordinary incidents should not be dismissed as harmless misunderstandings, arguing that such experiences can have a lasting impact on those targeted.
Sabrina concluded by saying she felt it was important to speak publicly about the encounter, warning that what may appear to be isolated incidents can reflect broader social attitudes that are becoming increasingly visible in everyday life.
