'Doctor Who Christmas' episode scrapped as BBC plans major franchise overhaul
The broadcaster says the decision is part of a long-term strategy to restructure the franchise
The BBC has cancelled the planned 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special following a major behind-the-scenes shake-up involving key creative partners, including showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf.
The corporation confirmed the decision in an official statement, saying it was made after “careful consideration” and acknowledging that it would likely disappoint fans of the long-running sci-fi series.
According to the BBC, the cancellation is part of a broader plan to reassess and restructure how Doctor Who is produced moving forward.
“After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode,” the statement said.
The broadcaster added that instead of proceeding with a standalone festive special, it would focus on long-term planning for the franchise to ensure its future stability and creative direction.
“This decision was not taken lightly,” the BBC said, “but in order to set the show up for future series, we are choosing to invest in the long-term future of the show.”
As part of the restructuring, the BBC confirmed that Doctor Who will now be opened to competitive bidding, allowing new production teams to pitch for control of the series.
The move is in line with the broadcaster’s charter requirements and is intended to secure what it described as the “next phase of the show for future generations.”
The previously planned Christmas special was originally intended as a transitional episode to maintain continuity during a period of uncertainty. However, the BBC said it is no longer required as plans evolve.
Showrunner Russell T Davies also addressed the decision in a social media post, confirming that the Christmas episode would not move forward.
He said the special had been developed as a way to “guarantee a future” for the series during an earlier uncertain period, but noted that no script had been completed and no cast had been finalised.
Despite the cancellation, the Doctor Who franchise remains in active development. The BBC confirmed that additional projects are continuing, including an upcoming animated series aimed at younger audiences.
The changes come amid broader shifts in the show’s international distribution strategy following the end of a major streaming partnership that previously expanded its global reach.
