Teen survives Atlanta Train shooting after bag stops bullet to chest
The rising senior at KIPP Atlanta suffered multiple gunshot wounds and sustained serious injuries to his hand and leg
A 17-year-old student is recovering after being shot multiple times in what authorities described as a random attack aboard an Atlanta transit train, with a crossbody bag reportedly preventing a potentially fatal gunshot wound.
J'Von Easterling was returning from a science and engineering program at the Georgia Institute of Technology on June 5 when the shooting occurred aboard a stationary MARTA train at the Midtown station shortly before 7 p.m. local time. According to a GoFundMe campaign launched on his behalf, the teenager was the victim of a "random and senseless act" of violence.
The rising senior at KIPP Atlanta suffered multiple gunshot wounds and sustained serious injuries to his hand and leg. However, a crossbody bag worn across his chest is credited with stopping a bullet that could have caused far more severe injuries. Easterling has since undergone multiple surgeries on his leg and is expected to require additional surgery on his hand.
KIPP Atlanta Schools expressed support for the student and his family as he continues his recovery. In a statement, the school described Easterling as a state champion in track and field and a leader in student government, calling him an exceptional young man who represents the best of the school community.
Federal authorities have charged 42-year-old Anthony Gresham of Lithia Springs, Georgia, in connection with the shooting. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia, Gresham faces charges including committing an act of violence with intent to cause serious bodily injury on a mass transportation system, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Investigators allege Gresham approached the area where Easterling was seated and fired three shots in the teen's direction before fleeing the scene. Authorities said he was apprehended in Douglas County two days later.
Officials also noted that Gresham has previous convictions in multiple Georgia counties, including armed robbery, aggravated assault, theft, robbery by force, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms.
The suspect is expected to appear in federal court at a later date.
The incident comes weeks after another violent attack on Atlanta's MARTA transit system, when a 66-year-old woman was fatally stabbed aboard a train. The latest shooting has renewed attention on safety concerns within the region's public transportation network as Easterling continues his recovery.
