Justin Trudeau has responded to criticism after choosing to support his girlfriend Katy Perry at the U.S. World Cup opening ceremony instead of attending Canada’s first match in the tournament.

The former Canadian Prime Minister reportedly attended the Los Angeles opening ceremony, where Perry performed, while Canada played its opening World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12.

Following the backlash, Trudeau addressed the reaction on X on June 14, jokingly explaining his decision while showing his support for Canada’s team.

“Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup,” Trudeau wrote.

Perry headlined the opening ceremony in Los Angeles, marking the first World Cup match hosted in the United States since 1994.

The singer has also recently shared a rare glimpse into her relationship with Trudeau during her Lifetimes tour, opening up about feeling happier and more grounded.

“I would say now, at the end of 91 shows, I feel like a more grounded person in so many aspects of my life. I am very in love,” Perry said.

Rumors surrounding Trudeau and Perry’s relationship began in 2025, with the pair later sparking increased public interest.

Before his relationship with Perry, Trudeau was married to broadcaster Sophie Grégoire Trudeau for 18 years.

The former couple announced their separation in 2023 and share three children together.

Trudeau’s appearance at the World Cup ceremony continues to draw attention as fans and critics react to his decision to balance personal support with national sporting moments.
